LOS ANGELES–For those of you who have been waiting for some really big news to come out of the video game industry, Microsoft answered your call Monday with its innovative “Project Natal,” a hands-free motion-sensitive controller system.

Announced during Microsoft’s annual E3 press conference, Project Natal seems almost certainly to be the culmination of several years of work by an Israeli start-up called 3DV Systems, which Microsoft recently acquired.

The technology, as demonstrated (see video below), appears geared toward allowing users to control games, movies, and anything else on their Xbox system with their hands alone, and without touching any hardware. Read the rest of this entry »

Lakers Return to Finals Determined to Win This Time

May 31st, 2009

The decade began with destruction in the form of a crushing Shaquille O’Neal dunk, finesse in the form of a seductive Kobe Bryant drive, and the relative calm of Phil Jackson and his Zen. The Los Angeles Lakers won three championships from 2000 to 2002 and appeared destined to keep adding to their dynasty until the trio was split by hubris and personality clashes that played out in an ugly implosion against the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 NBA Finals.

It’s been seven years since the Lakers last hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy, which explains their subdued celebration after defeating the Denver Nuggets, 119-92, in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals on Friday night to advance to the NBA Finals for the 30th time in franchise history. The Lakers donned their conference championship T-shirts long enough for a brief ceremony and trophy presentation, then they put them aside. As they left Pepsi Center, center Andrew Bynum was the only player still wearing his crisp, new T-shirt.

“We’re very thankful about being in this position, obviously,” Bryant said after scoring 35 points and contributing 10 assists in the series clincher. “But we’re ready to move on to the NBA Finals and try to take care of business.” Read the rest of this entry »

Yellow Ribbon Program

May 25th, 2009

What is the Yellow Ribbon Program?

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.  This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses that exceed the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.  The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution. UFC 98 results: Rashad Evans vs. Lyoto Machida for the UFC Lt. Hvt. Championship, Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes, Powell’s thoughts on the two big fights

May 24th, 2009

The following are the results of the UFC 98 pay-per-view, which took place on Saturday night in Las Vegas.

-Frankie Edgar defeated Sean Sherk via unanimous decision.

-Chael Sonnen over Dan Miller via unanimous decision.

-Drew McFedries defeated Xavier Foupa-Pokam via first-round knockout.

-Krzysztof Soszynski beat Andre Gusmao via first-round knockout.

-Matt Hughes beat Matt Serra via unanimous decision.

-Lyoto Machida defeated Rashad Evans via second-round knockout to win the UFC Lt. Hvt. Championship.

Powell’s POV: I stopped by the bar on my way home from the Minnesota Twins game (looking for the sweep over the Brewers!) and caught the last three fights. Hughes vs. Serra was underwhelming given the years of tension between the two, but the judges made the right call. Serra didn’t do enough offensively. It wasn’t a horrible fight, it just wasn’t as much fun as I hoped it would be.

Meanwhile, Machida dominated Evans, who looked leery of his opponent’s striking ability from the start. Machida won the first round handily. Machida hit Evans with a nice flurry in the second round, but Evans answered with two or three nice punches of his own. However, that was the only notable offense that Evans had during the fight. Machida rocked him in the second round and knocked him out to win the title in a very impressive performance.

Harvard Shooting

May 19th, 2009

Today’s shooting at Harvard University’s Kirkland House reminds us of how fragile is human life and how less are our students protected. Harvard shooting left one person shot. The victim is a college age student, but it’s not clear if the person is a Harvard University student.

Havard students were preparing for the final exams where the shooting near Kirkland House shattered their peace and calm. According to Bostong.com “Sergeant James DeFrancesco of the Cambridge Police said that after authorities were alerted about 4:50 p.m. they found the victim on Dunster Street, outside Kirkland House, one of Harvard’s 12 undergraduate houses. DeFrancesco said the victim was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.”

Harvard Crimson reports the details

Unidentified ‘college-aged’ male is shot in Kirkland House. House Master says Kirkland residents not involved; identities of victim and shooter still unknown.

An unidentified man was shot sometime before 5 p.m. Monday in the basement of J-Entry of Kirkland House, in what House Master Tom Conley is calling “in most likelihood, a targeted shooting.”

The victim was bleeding from the lower torso but still conscious, according to Dental School student Jared M. Sprague, who says he helped support the victim after the shooting. Sprague said the victim appeared to be a “college-aged” African American.

According to Conley, the victim was not a Harvard student.

Conley, who spoke to police shortly after the shooting, also said two to three suspects fled the scene after the incident. He added that the victim was in stable condition and had been brought to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

In response to a question about whether police were looking for a gunman, Cambridge Police Department spokesman James DeFrancesco responded that it was “very possible.” DeFrancesco said he did not know whether the victim was a Harvard student.

At 7:20 p.m., a line of 11 Harvard and Cambridge police officers spaced themselves out across the grassy Malkin Athletic Center quad, walking toward Kirkland from the Lowell House side with heads bent as if looking for something.

Multiple students told The Crimson that they heard three noises that sounded like gunshots shortly before 5 p.m.

Bryant Bonner ‘09, a student in E entry of Kirkland, said he heard bangs, then “saw three people running from J entryway through my window. They were wearing baseball caps.”

Greta Friar ‘11, who lives J-entry, said she heard three shots and immediately after someone saying, “Shit, shit! Oh, shit!” Friar said she later saw bullet casings on the stairwell in the entryway.

Kirkland House Masters Tom and Verena Conley notified the House of the shooting in an e-mail sent at 5:32 p.m. A Harvard University text message alert was sent to students subscribed to the system 13 minutes later.

“We ask everyone to cooperate with the police and staff in the hours ahead,” the House Masters wrote. “We will apprise everyone of further developments.”

Around 8 p.m., University President Drew G. Faust walked into Kirkland, telling a reporter she was there to address students.

Sprague, the dental student who said he helped the victim, said he walking towards the Malkin Athletic Center from Education School when he saw the victim stumbling toward him. Another woman on the scene called 911 upon witnessing the student’s distress, Sprague said.

A portion of Dunster Street was been blocked off starting at Mt. Auburn Street and extending south after police arrived on the scene.

Massachusetts, Cambridge, and Harvard police were all on the scene as of 6:30 p.m. News helicopters were also hovering overhead midway through the hour.
